Gaël Monfils retires from professional tennis at 40

French tennis player Gaël Monfils has retired from professional tennis at the age of 40.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency has added him to its retired-player list, which means he is no longer eligible to enter tournaments and is removed from anti-doping protocols.

Monfils won 13 ATP Tour singles titles between his first, in Poland in 2005, and his last, in Auckland in January 2025.

His best Grand Slam results were semi-finals at the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016.

He withdrew from the ATP 250 event in Lyon, where he had received a wild card.

His final tournament was the US Open this year, where he lost in the second round; he had previously said he planned to retire after the 2026 season and had been expected to play in Paris in November.
