Family urges France to secure release of journalist held in Algeria

French journalist Christophe Gleizes remains imprisoned in Algeria after receiving a seven-year sentence for glorifying terrorism.

He was arrested in May 2024 while reporting on the Jeunesse sportive de Kabylie football club and has worked with the magazine So Foot.

His family and Reporters Without Borders are calling on France's leaders to secure his release.

His mother and stepfather visited him about 10 days before speaking publicly, while his brother said the family can visit only once every three months and cannot call or send letters.

Zinédine Zidane's public support lifted Gleizes's standing among fellow prisoners, his family said.

His case comes amid strained relations between France and Algeria, and his family has warned that French election campaigning could make matters more complicated.

They want the French government to act quickly for his release.
