Egypt explores lithium battery cooperation with Russian company RENERA
Egyptian Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat discussed battery cooperation with Russia’s RENERA during a visit to the company’s factory.
The talks took place during the Russia-Africa summit, where the minister met RENERA’s general director, Anastasia Mikhailova.
Egypt is exploring technology transfer and local manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems, but no final agreement was announced.
The factory’s stated capacity is 18 million battery cells a year, equivalent to about 50,000 batteries, and its production lines are 95% automated.
Its batteries serve electric vehicles and public transport, as well as backup power for hospitals, data centres and industrial sites.
Egypt says storage can support solar and wind expansion by helping keep electricity supplies steady when renewable output varies.
The next step is continued discussion on possible cooperation, technology transfer and supplying storage systems.
