South Korean court upholds fine for market shop owner who injured fellow trader

A court in South Korea upheld a 5 million won fine for an 83-year-old egg shop owner who assaulted a fellow market trader.

The incident happened at a traditional market in Iksan, where the other trader, aged 84, ran a fried chicken shop.

The egg shop owner attacked her after she called her “gashina,” a term that upset her.

The victim was injured badly enough to need 12 weeks of treatment, including for a broken vertebra.

The appeals court said the assault was serious and noted that the defendant had not compensated the victim, who had not forgiven her.

The ruling leaves the original fine in place after the defendant’s appeal was rejected.
