Federal judge Alvin Hellerstein dies at 92 while overseeing Maduro case

Manhattan federal judge Alvin Hellerstein died Wednesday at 92, a court official confirmed.

He had served on the federal bench for nearly three decades, first appointed in 1998.

Hellerstein was overseeing the prosecution of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured earlier this year and faces narco-terrorism conspiracy charges.

The judge had presided over a hearing in that case just two weeks before his death.

His work also included lawsuits over the September 11 attacks, including claims by victims and their families that continued for two decades.

He also ruled in several cases involving Donald Trump, including rejecting the president’s latest effort to move his New York hush-money case to federal court and have it dismissed.

The accounts do not say who will take over the Maduro case.
