Central Ilbo sale contract delayed, with Nov. 6 deadline

Dow, CJ and Shinsegae did not sign a planned deal to buy new shares in South Korean newspaper Central Ilbo by Oct.

30.

Dow and CJ were named preferred bidders on Oct.

19, and Shinsegae said the next day it would join CJ in the bid.

The proposed deal is conditional and includes a payment of 10% of the share investment; the bid was reported to be worth just over 500 billion won.

The signing deadline can be extended once, to Nov.

6, under the sale process.

Central Ilbo is working to return to normal operations through a process known as a workout, agreed with its creditors.

A signed deal by Nov.

6 could help it leave the workout by year-end, if the creditors approve it; the current agreement with them runs until Nov.

8.

The delay may reflect unresolved discussions among the three prospective buyers, while creditors are seeking a full write-down of shares held by existing owners.

Central Ilbo's staff have also raised concerns about editorial independence, and the company says the conditional contract includes a provision protecting it.
