Swiss village plans truck deliveries to protect drinking water supply
The Swiss municipality of Domleschg plans to truck water to Feldis and Scheid after drought reduced their water supplies.
The two communities rely on springs, and falling spring flows could leave Scheid short of water from mid-December and Feldis from early November.
The municipality will rent a truck and two tanks to carry water from springs elsewhere in the area.
Each trip can carry about 25,000 litres, and six to eight trips could support the water networks in an emergency.
The plan is intended to keep drinking water available through winter.
Truck deliveries are new for Domleschg, although it has previously taken steps such as turning off public fountains to save water.
During two holiday weeks, Feldis expects more visitors and demand to rise to about 200,000 litres a day, so the municipality plans to bring in a second truck and driver.
