Week 8 upsets hurt Big 12 playoff hopes as Miami improves to 7-0

BYU and Texas Tech lost in Week 8 upsets, weakening the Big 12’s hopes of sending several teams to the College Football Playoff.

BYU lost 39-31 to UCF in double overtime, and Texas Tech fell 37-24 to Cincinnati.

Before the upsets, the Big 12 had a chance to place as many as three teams in the playoff, but that path is now harder.

Miami beat Pittsburgh 52-23 to reach 7-0, staying unbeaten and 5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns, and receiver Malachi Toney had 194 yards and three touchdowns.

Miami reached No.

1 in the AP poll for the first time since 2002, as other leading teams have struggled.

Baylor also lost, falling 25-24 to Kansas after giving up a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter; the defeat ended Baylor’s 14-game winning streak against the Jayhawks.

The report says the loss marks a breaking point for coach Dave Aranda’s tenure, but gives no details on what happens next.
