Gareth Batty leaves Surrey to join Chennai Super Kings

Gareth Batty is leaving Surrey to join Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach.

The move ends his 21-year association with the English county, where he played and later coached.

Batty became Surrey head coach in 2022 and led the team to three straight County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024.

He retired as a player in 2021 after representing England and taking more than 500 wickets for Surrey across formats.

He will join CSK for the 2027 IPL season, bringing experience from English county cricket to the five-time IPL champions.

His departure adds to a coaching gap in county cricket: three of the 10 teams set to play in Division One next season are without a head coach.

While we are sorry to see him go, I understand that this opportunity was too good for him to pass up on and will enable him to spend more time with his family outside of the IPL season.
