Japan’s new disaster agency urges people to prepare for major emergencies

Japan’s new Disaster Management Agency began work on November 2 as the government’s central body for disaster response.

Disaster Minister Goshi Hosono issued an emergency appeal urging people across Japan to prepare for major disasters.

The country faces risks including major earthquakes and a possible Mount Fuji eruption.

People are urged to store water and food for at least three days, and preferably enough for a week, as well as portable toilets and other daily essentials.

The appeal also calls for checking homes and securing furniture, learning local hazards and evacuation routes, preparing emergency bags, and joining community drills.

The goal is to reduce deaths and damage because government services may not be able to help everyone quickly during a very large disaster.

Central government ministries and prefectures were also asked to review their preparations, and they must report progress by the end of the year.
