Annie Andrews projected to win South Carolina Senate race

Democrat Annie Andrews is projected to defeat Republican Darline Graham in South Carolina’s US Senate race.

Graham was appointed to the seat after her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, died in July, then ran for a full six-year term.

The win would flip a seat Republicans have held for nearly three decades; South Carolina last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1998.

Andrews would also be the first woman elected to represent the state in the Senate.

Graham had President Donald Trump’s endorsement, but some Republicans backed a write-in effort for Congressman Ralph Norman after he lost the Republican primary.

Andrews focused her campaign on affordability and economic concerns, while criticizing Graham’s qualifications.

The projection puts Andrews on course to serve a full Senate term, though the sources do not give a date for when she would take office.
