Guillaume Meurice stopped by police during night in Liège

French comedian Guillaume Meurice was stopped by police outside a games bar in Liège, Belgium, at about 2 a.m.

on Sunday, October 18.

Police said he approached officers with a mocking attitude as they checked another person’s identity and refused repeated requests to move away.

Meurice said he came over to watch officers detain a man, stepped back when asked, and made a joke to an officer.

Officers moved him aside, searched him and checked his wallet, then told him to leave the area; police said they did not know he was a comedian and treated him like anyone else.

Meurice and police disagree about his conduct before the check.

He also said he saw a woman pushed to the ground and taken away by officers, which he described as the real violence of the night.

Police say several checks took place outside the bar, and that officers were insulted and had beer glasses thrown at them; they did not attribute those acts to Meurice.
