TRAI proposes rules for responsible AI use in telecom

India’s telecom regulator, TRAI, has proposed rules for AI used in telecom networks and services.

The draft applies to licensed and authorised telecom companies, including operators such as Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

Companies would need board-approved AI policies and to classify each system as high, medium or low risk.

The proposals also call for human oversight, safeguards for data and checks before new or changed systems are used.

Serious AI failures would have to be reported to TRAI, while companies would keep records of incidents and work to limit harm.

Customers who complain of harm linked to AI would need a way to have their issues resolved within a set time.

TRAI is inviting feedback until November 27, 2026, after which the draft may be revised and finalised.
