Mexico to fund water improvements for Guadalajara, with costs still under review
Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico’s federal government will fund water improvements for the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco.
The work is estimated to cost 12 billion to 13 billion pesos.
The area has about two million residents, and people have reported cloudy, foul-smelling water and service cuts.
The crisis has led to protests, arrests and allegations of police abuse.
Jalisco’s government is already investing about 7.5 billion pesos in a water treatment plant.
Sheinbaum said officials will meet on Thursday to decide how to finance the work without adding to debt.
