Trump to press Southeast Asian leaders on tariffs and minerals at Asean summit

Donald Trump is expected at the Asean summit in Manila from November 16 to 18, according to the Philippines.

He is expected to seek concessions on tariffs and critical minerals from Southeast Asian governments.

The visit will be his second consecutive appearance at the summit, showing continued US engagement in the region.

Washington is also taking a firm stance on China, and Trump is expected to attend the Apec summit in Shenzhen later that week.

The trip comes before an expected meeting with China’s Xi Jinping, and analysts say it could reassure regional partners about US commitment.

But pressure to make deals and align more closely with Washington could push Asean members into separate arrangements with the two powers, weakening economic ties across the region.
