Spanish sports groups seek return to 10% VAT on sports services
Spanish sports groups want VAT on sports services cut from 21% to 10%, the rate that applied before 2012.
The Spanish Golf Federation and the Spanish Association of Golf Courses commissioned an analysis using golf as a case study.
It estimates the cut would leave the state €2.5 million better off after accounting for changes in direct tax revenue, activity and tourist spending.
The analysis estimates an initial €35 million drop in direct revenue, offset by €3.2 million from increased activity and €34.5 million in VAT linked to tourism spending.
The Spanish Sports Association has taken the proposal to Congress and wants it extended across the sports sector.
The sector is estimated to account for 3.28% of Spain’s GDP and 635,000 jobs.
Lawmakers would need to consider the proposal; the sources do not say what happens next.
