Black Ops 1 and 2 Ports Sell More Than 11 Million Copies
Activision’s PlayStation ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 reportedly sold more than 11 million copies on PS4 and PS5.
The games were first released in 2010 and 2012, and the new versions bring them to newer PlayStation consoles.
Former Treyarch developer Gavin Goslin says the original creators receive none of the port revenue.
He called the success bittersweet because he and his team worked long hours under crunch to make the games.
The ports kept the games in their original state, without major updates, which is what fans wanted.
Before their release, PlayStation players needed an old PS3 to play them because they were not available through backward compatibility on PS4 or PS5.
Activision says demand exceeded its expectations, and the company plans to apply what it learned to future Call of Duty games, including Modern Warfare 4, due October 23.
Activision’s PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 reportedly sold more than 11 million copies combined on PS4 and PS5.
Gavin Goslin, a developer who worked on the games at Treyarch, said the original creators receive none of the money from the ports.
Goslin said it was “bittersweet” to see the games continue to perform well while executives benefit financially.
Activision marketing boss Tyler Bahl said the ports were major successes, helped by pent-up demand.
The ports brought the original games to PS4 and PS5 without remakes, remasters or significant updates.
