U.S.-Mexico trade talks could shape Canada’s position in CUSMA review

U.S.-Mexico trade talks could shape Canada’s position in CUSMA review

The United States and Mexico are working toward a trade arrangement ahead of the review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, known as CUSMA.

The review is scheduled for next year.

The proposed arrangement focuses on tariff relief and policy concessions rather than a full rewrite of the agreement.

The U.S. and Mexican trade teams held formal talks in July, but a meeting planned for September was postponed.

Formal talks between the United States and Canada have been stalled since negotiations collapsed in August.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says he speaks frequently with Canada’s trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc.

Progress between the United States and Mexico could help set the terms Canada faces in the review.
