Shanghai plans satellite internet fund and 3,000 satellites by 2030

On October 27, Shanghai began setting up a satellite internet industry fund with investment platforms from the city and its districts, alongside private investors.

The fund is intended to use state capital to support innovation and build the industry.

A city plan for 2027 to 2030 sets a target of more than 3,000 satellites in orbit by 2030 and a core industry worth over 80 billion yuan.

Satellite internet links satellites with ground equipment and services, and is expected to support future networks such as 6G.

The competition is partly measured by how many satellites are in orbit; the article says China’s planned constellations still trail Starlink by a wide margin.

Shanghai is using public investment to build capacity across satellite manufacturing, launches and related services, rather than aiming only to make satellites.

The city’s next step is to develop the industry ecosystem and reach its 2030 targets.
