Investors favor shorter Indonesian government bonds amid global uncertainty

Indonesia’s government bond auction on 13 October drew strong overall demand, with bids totaling Rp64.86 trillion against an indicative target of Rp30 trillion.

Investors showed stronger interest in short- and medium-term bonds than long-term bonds, a shift reflected in the auction’s bid-to-cover ratios.

Finance Ministry official Suminto said this pattern is a common response to global uncertainty and expected interest-rate rises, not evidence that investors have lost confidence in Indonesia.

The government sold Rp35 trillion in bonds, while foreign investors bid Rp9.63 trillion and were allocated Rp4.31 trillion.

BCA economist David Sumual said investors remain concerned about the uncertain medium- and long-term economic outlook, a trend also seen in other countries.

The government says it will manage future bond sales carefully, taking account of market conditions and its budget financing needs.
