VisionQuest gives Ultron a major new role in the MCU

Ultron returns in Marvel’s Disney+ series VisionQuest after more than a decade away from live-action MCU projects.

The character, voiced by James Spader, first appeared in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The series gives Ultron room to change, as he explores experiences such as art, culture and human feeling rather than remaining defined only by his original drive to destroy humanity.

Episodes five and six also develop his relationship with Jocasta, a robotic character he created in the comics.

Ultron and Jocasta kiss at the end of episode six, after a story of threats, flirtation and contrasting views about humanity and machines.

This makes Ultron a more complicated figure and raises the stakes for his future in the MCU.

His return comes ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in December.
