Governments warn citizens to avoid protests in France after riots

Protests in France over high prices and declining public services turned violent over the weekend.

Thousands were arrested, shops were looted and a town hall was set on fire as groups clashed with police.

Several European governments issued fresh travel warnings, urging their citizens to avoid demonstrations and large crowds.

Italy also told its citizens to register their presence in France, while Germany warned of possible further riots and fines or damage claims for people who ignore police orders to leave unauthorised demonstrations.

The US Embassy in Paris also urged Americans to stay away from protest areas and track transport disruptions and curfew updates.

Travellers are being told to follow local authorities' instructions as France's security situation remains unsettled.
