Indonesia Upgrades 66 Regional Hospitals and Expands Primary Care
Indonesia plans to upgrade 66 regional hospitals from lower to higher service classes between 2025 and 2027.
As of September 2026, 21 of the 22 hospitals targeted for 2025 had been completed, and 18 were operating; construction had started at 18 of the 20 targeted for 2026.
The government says the upgrades should let people receive more care without travelling to big cities, including in remote and island regions.
The programme covers places such as Raja Ampat, the Aru Islands, Nias and parts of Papua.
About 9,000 community health centres have adopted a life-stage care system, covering people from infancy through old age.
The government says it will equip 10,000 centres with X-ray machines to help screen for tuberculosis and plans to build 1,988 new centres between 2027 and 2029.
Officials say doctors will be assigned to regional areas, while the hospital and clinic upgrades are intended to make health services more evenly available across Indonesia.
Indonesia is upgrading 66 regional public hospitals from class D or D Pratama to class C in a phased program running from 2025 to 2027.
As of September 2026, 21 of the 22 hospitals targeted for upgrades in 2025 had been completed, and 18 were operating.
The government is also expanding primary care through community health centers, including a program adopted by 9,000 centers.
The initiatives aim to make health services more accessible and reduce the need for patients to travel to large cities.
The hospital program includes locations in island and eastern regions, such as Raja Ampat, the Anambas Islands and parts of Papua.
