Morena lawmaker threatens defamation suit over allegations about Mexico’s electoral body
Morena lawmaker Sergio Gutiérrez Luna says he will sue journalist Aurora Zepeda for moral damage over claims about his role at Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, or INE.
Zepeda reported allegations that he was involved in collecting money from employees and assigning posts in the institute’s internal oversight office.
Gutiérrez Luna denies controlling jobs or collecting money and says the claims are unsupported.
Zepeda has said employees are unsure whether he ordered deductions or was involved only in assigning posts.
Senator Óscar Cantón Zetina wants alleged irregularities at the INE investigated and says officials should face sanctions if authorities establish responsibility.
The call comes after INE president Guadalupe Taddei resigned on October 25 amid separate allegations involving contracts and possible conflicts of interest.
The INE is continuing preparations for the 2026–27 federal election, when Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies will be renewed.

What people are saying
What we have to recognize is that there is a real crisis at the National Electoral Institute. No one can hide that.
If Ms. Taddei is responsible, along with twenty others in senior positions, they should be thrown in prison.
But it is not enough to think that because you leave, with forgiveness, that is it. There must be a truly exemplary punishment.
