Gun attack on Sonora investigators kills officer after court ruling
Gunmen attacked the AMIC offices in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora on the evening of October 28.
The attack came 15 minutes after a judge put two men, known as “El Nolo” and “El Pollo,” on trial as suspected killers of AMIC investigator Juan Manuel Quintana Valenzuela.
Quintana Valenzuela was killed in Ímuris on June 18, 2026, and the two men had been detained in an October 23 operation that ended with the death of crime-group figure “El Meny Carranza.”
AMIC agent Alberto Guzmán Aguiar was killed inside the building when attackers fired from outside.
The attack followed a broader campaign against criminal groups in the Ímuris-Magdalena region, and prompted AMIC to strengthen operations with support from federal and state security forces.
The next morning, authorities searched four properties linked to suspected attackers and seized three properties, ammunition and a spider monkey; the investigation is continuing.
