Ningxia County Expands Food Processing to Raise Value of Local Products

Jingyuan County in China's Ningxia region is expanding processing of local products that were once mainly sold as raw materials.

Local beef is now divided into 32 cuts and shipped to major Chinese cities through a cold-chain network.

The county says more than 60% of its beef cattle are processed locally, while returns for the industry have risen by about 30%.

Spring water is being bottled and sold, with other drinks planned as the business grows.

Cooperation with Fujian and new investment have also brought factories and jobs, including work for local women and orders shipped to Britain.

The county signed 17 investment projects worth 1.92 billion yuan this year, across food processing, drinks and textiles.

Jingyuan says 67% of its farm products now receive deeper processing and 86% of farming households have stable income through local industries, as the shift from raw materials to finished goods continues.
