Tamil Nadu sets three-year target for 2.5 GW of battery storage
Tamil Nadu has issued a three-year policy to expand battery energy storage across the state.
It aims to deploy 2.5 GW of storage, equal to 10 GWh, to help use more solar and wind power and support the electricity grid.
Batteries can store surplus renewable electricity when demand is low and release it when demand rises.
From April 1, 2027, new solar and solar-hybrid projects of at least 1 MW must include battery capacity equal to at least 10% of their installed solar capacity.
The batteries must be able to supply power continuously for four hours, and eligible projects can receive a full waiver of transmission and wheeling charges for 10 years.
Tamil Nadu’s distribution corporation will procure 2,500 MW of storage capacity in the policy’s first phase.
The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation will coordinate and monitor projects through a single-window system.
Tamil Nadu has released a three-year Battery Energy Storage Systems Policy 2026, targeting 2.5 GW/10 GWh of battery storage.
The policy aims to support grid stability, integrate renewable energy and strengthen energy security.
New solar and solar-hybrid projects of at least 1 MW that meet the policy’s timing criteria must install battery capacity equal to at least 10% of the solar project’s installed capacity.
Eligible battery projects can receive a full waiver of applicable transmission and wheeling charges.
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited will coordinate, facilitate and monitor implementation.
