South Korea to send P-8A patrol aircraft to Gulf of Aden
South Korea will send a P-8A patrol aircraft as part of its Cheonghae Unit deployment to waters near the Gulf of Aden.
The aircraft will monitor shipping routes and look for suspicious activity in an area where pirate activity has increased.
The P-8A can use radar, cameras and sound-sensing buoys to search for ships and submarines over a wide area.
It will not carry attack weapons because the deployment is not meant to involve combat, and its patrols will stay outside Iranian territory and waters and the Strait of Hormuz.
The deployment will also include unmanned systems to search for and remove sea mines, as well as an explosives-disposal team.
The added equipment is meant to prepare for risks around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, including uncertainty linked to Houthi fighting.
The forces will train with multinational naval units from a base in Djibouti to build their operational skills.
South Korea will send a P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft to the Gulf of Aden as part of the Cheonghae Unit.
The aircraft will monitor waters off the Gulf of Aden and south of Duqm, Oman, to detect unusual activity near South Korean ships’ routes.
It will carry defensive systems rather than weapons for attacking targets, under a policy of not taking part in combat.
A total of 45 personnel, including command staff, will be sent for the P-8A deployment.
Uncrewed mine-countermeasure equipment and an explosive ordnance disposal team will also join the mission.
