Overheight machinery load brings down pedestrian bridge in Monterrey

A truck carrying an excavator struck a pedestrian bridge on Constitution Avenue in Monterrey, Mexico, on October 13.

The truck was transporting machinery for Metro construction by Mota-Engil, and the load was too high to pass beneath the bridge.

Part of the bridge fell onto a passing Volkswagen, damaging its hood; another car also sustained minor damage.

Authorities reported no injuries, though one account said a motorcyclist who fell after braking left with minor injuries.

The incident blocked express lanes and caused long traffic delays.

Mota-Engil accepted responsibility for repairs to the bridge and affected vehicles, according to state officials.

Specialists are to assess whether the remaining bridge section is safe before officials decide what to do next.

The governor said the collapse would not delay the Metro construction work.
