UN Calls on Indonesia to Help Renew Multilateralism
The UN urged Indonesia to help renew multilateralism at a UN Day event in Jakarta on October 27.
Multilateralism means countries working together through international institutions to tackle shared problems.
UN Resident Coordinator Gita Sabharwal said Indonesia’s diplomacy, peacekeeping and work on climate change give it a growing role in shaping global cooperation.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had visited Jakarta the previous week and met President Prabowo Subianto.
The UN said cooperation should advance peace, development and human rights, with dialogue instead of division.
In Indonesia, UN-backed efforts include improving maternal care at more than 9,000 community health centres and managing over 5 million hectares of forests and peatlands.
The UN also supports Indonesia’s solar, industry and farming initiatives, but no further steps were announced.
The United Nations called on Indonesia to work with other countries to renew multilateralism and address global challenges.
UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia Gita Sabharwal made the appeal at a UN Day event in Jakarta on October 27, 2026.
Sabharwal said Indonesia’s diplomacy, peacekeeping and work on climate change and sustainable development reflected its leadership.
She said the Global South should help shape the global system, not simply have a voice in it.
The UN also cited its support for Indonesia’s health, forest management, renewable energy and agriculture initiatives.

Our task is to renew multilateralism for the world that is emerging,
And we see it in the enduring Bandung spirit, the conviction that the Global South must not simply have a voice in the global system, but also a hand in shaping it,
