Tijuana activist José Alfredo García is killed after trying to mediate extortion

José Alfredo García, a local activist in Tijuana, was shot dead on November 1, 2026.

He was a coordinator for the Independent Hat Movement in Baja California, Mexico.

He had gone to help a nephew facing alleged extortion and was reportedly trying to mediate when he was attacked.

The killing happened hours after García joined a march marking one year since the murder of movement founder Carlos Manzo.

No arrests had been reported, and the state prosecutor's office found three spent 9-millimeter casings at the scene.

The group called for a thorough, transparent investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

Authorities are being urged to investigate the killing, but no further steps were specified.
