Supreme Court lets Ashish Mishra stay in Lakhimpur Kheri until November 16

The Supreme Court allowed Ashish Mishra to visit Lakhimpur Kheri for Diwali until November 16.

Mishra is accused in the case and is out on bail; earlier bail conditions restricted him from staying in the district.

The case concerns violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, on October 3, 2021, when eight people were killed during a farmers’ protest.

The victims’ lawyer and Mishra’s lawyer disagreed over the transfer of the judge who had been hearing the case, while the Chief Justice said the court was not making a finding against anyone.

The state says 90 of the trial’s 131 witnesses have been examined, and a special public prosecutor has been appointed.

The Supreme Court said the trial should be completed expeditiously, without unnecessary delay or undue haste.
