Mexico’s state universities seek 36.8 billion pesos in extra funding
Mexico’s public state universities say they face a 55.4 billion-peso funding gap accumulated between 2019 and 2026.
University leaders told the Chamber of Deputies that they need 36.8 billion pesos in extra funding to address the shortfall.
They say inflation and the gradual removal of special funding for research, equipment and facilities have added to the pressure.
The universities serve more than three million students, and the shortfall puts pay, pensions, facilities and student places at risk.
The national universities association says 211,000 students leave public universities each year, and 76% do so because of financial difficulties.
The proposed funding includes 9.5 billion pesos for immediate needs in 2027, with the rest to be provided gradually for a special higher-education fund.
University leaders are asking lawmakers to restore special funds and provide enough money to sustain teaching, research and other university work.
State public universities in Mexico are seeking an additional 36.8 billion pesos to address accumulated financial pressures.
