Valérie Grenier injures knee before World Cup season opener

Canadian skier Valérie Grenier injured her knee in training in Sölden, Austria, ahead of the alpine World Cup season opener.

The 29-year-old from Ontario said she was hurt on the race hill two days before sharing the news.

She will miss the opener and have surgery Friday, but the full extent of the injury is not yet known.

Grenier is a three-time Olympian with six World Cup medals, including three wins in giant slalom.

The injury interrupts a strong finish to last season, when she won the final giant slalom race at the World Cup Finals in Norway.

Her recovery timeline remains unclear until doctors assess the injury during surgery.

She plans to share another update next week.
