Indonesian Village Cooperatives to Expand Services Through Partnerships

Indonesia’s KDKMP cooperatives plan to partner with state-owned companies and financial institutions to offer services in villages and urban wards.

The partnerships are set to cover rice, cooking gas, subsidised fertiliser, sugar and other basic goods, as well as banking, small-scale loans, delivery services and non-prescription medicines.

The government describes the cooperatives as infrastructure for delivering public support, including food aid and subsidies, rather than as supermarkets.

Construction has been completed on 26,569 cooperative units, according to the government.

Officials are coordinating the placement of managers to help the built cooperatives begin operating.

The aim is to make basic goods, financing and public services easier to access for people in rural communities.
