Dictionary.com Names “Maxxing” Its 2026 Word of the Year

Dictionary.com chose “maxxing” as its 2026 Word of the Year.

The slang comes from “maximizing” and is used for efforts to get more of something, as in “protein-maxxing” or “looks-maxxing.”

The word appeared in digital media almost 19 times more often in August than its average monthly use in 2025.

Its rise has also been linked to AI businesses urging employees to use AI tools heavily, a practice sometimes called “token-maxxing.”

Some companies later pulled back after facing steep costs from that approach.

Dictionary.com says the word reflects a wider culture focused on getting the most out of everything, while its other top picks included “data center,” “Affordability,” “Odyssey” and “Unc.”

Oxford University Press and Merriam-Webster have yet to announce their 2026 choices.
