Saudi Arabia to charge for some unused reserved electricity capacity
Saudi Arabia’s Electricity Regulatory Authority approved an annual fee for some reserved but unused capacity.
The charge is 60 riyals per kilovolt-ampere and is due to start one month after the decision.
It applies only when electricity service has been in place for at least five years and the customer’s highest use in the past three years was below 80% of the contracted load.
Customers must also meet conditions related to their medium-voltage connection, transmission-station costs and location.
The fee is based on the gap between contracted capacity and recent peak use, using a calculation set out by the authority.
Providers must send three notices, and customers can reduce their contracted capacity to avoid the charge.
A separate annual bill comes after the notices, at least one month after the final notice.
