Phillies to designate catcher Garrett Stubbs for assignment

The Philadelphia Phillies plan to designate catcher Garrett Stubbs for assignment, which would remove him from their 40-man roster.

Stubbs joined the Phillies from the Houston Astros in the 2021-22 offseason and spent three seasons backing up J.T. Realmuto.

He later fell behind Rafael Marchán on the catching depth chart and played in 35 games this season, batting .153 without a home run.

Once the move is officially announced, the Phillies will have five days to trade Stubbs or place him on waivers.

He may clear waivers and choose minor league free agency, but that outcome is not certain.

Philadelphia’s catchers combined for a .183 batting average this year, the lowest production among major league teams.

The team wants to reduce Realmuto’s workload and may seek a more reliable backup catcher, with free-agent and trade options available.
