US midterms will decide control of Congress on November 3

US voters choose a new Congress on November 3 in midterm elections held halfway through President Donald Trump’s term.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election, along with 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

Midterms often act as a test of the sitting president’s policies, and the president’s party has usually lost House seats in past elections.

Polls show Democrats leading by about nine points nationally in the House race, but polls are snapshots and do not guarantee the result.

Democrats need to gain three House seats to take control, which would let them block parts of Trump’s agenda and investigate his administration.

They would need four more Senate seats to reach a majority, a harder task that depends on races in several states.

The cost of living is a major campaign issue, alongside the war, health costs and immigration; voting rules vary by state, and counting may take days.
