Red tourism brings visitors and income to Baiyazhai villages

In Baiyazhai, in Anhui province’s Susong county, local authorities are using revolutionary history to develop rural tourism.

The site is linked to the Red Army’s 27th Army, formed there in October 1932.

A museum opened in 2019, and the area became a base for on-site education in 2020.

Study groups and tourists visit throughout the year, drawn by the memorial sites and educational programmes.

Their spending supports local jobs and businesses, including guesthouses, restaurants and shops, while helping farmers sell tea, mushrooms and other local products.

The township is also linking historic sites with village visits and farm activities, and holding events such as trail races and local-produce festivals.

New visitor facilities include lodging, dining and farm experiences, with the aim of improving group visits and extending tourism’s benefits to residents.
