Konstanz to vote on planned bicycle parking garage at railway station

On 29 November, Konstanz residents will vote on a bicycle garage planned beside the city’s railway station.

The city would arrange and finance the project through its municipal utilities, and current plans envisage about 700 bicycle spaces.

About two-thirds of the spaces would be free, with lockers, bicycle boxes, a repair station and food businesses also planned.

Supporters say secure parking would make cycling and train travel easier and help clear crowded public space around the station.

Critics argue the project is too costly and question whether enough people will use it.

Construction is estimated at €8.7 million, with about 60% expected to come from grants; the city also forecasts an initial annual operating shortfall of about €374,000.

A binding yes vote would allow the project to continue, while a no vote would stop it; if the result does not meet the required threshold of about 13,500 votes, the city council will decide.

If approved, the garage is currently expected to open in 2031.
