Fed keeps rates unchanged and plans fewer rate votes from 2027

The US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged despite persistent inflation.

Fed chair Kevin Warsh said inflation remains too high, but the bank left its rate range at 3.75% to 4.00%.

The decision involved ten members voting to hold rates, while Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack supported a quarter-point increase.

The Fed traditionally makes rate decisions at eight meetings each year.

From 2027, one meeting will focus on long-term monetary strategy and will have no rate vote or policy statement.

In 2028, the Fed plans two strategy meetings and six rate-setting meetings.

Warsh said the approaching US midterm elections played no role in the decision to hold rates.

I did not hear any allusion to politics, elections, or what is going to happen in the coming week. I heard nothing about that, and I do not think it played any role in the decision, either for me or for my colleagues in the room.
