Kongsberg tests missile launcher built into a shipping container

Norwegian defence company Kongsberg tested a missile launcher inside a shipping container at an undisclosed military range in Norway in early October 2026.

The NSM Mission Module uses a standard 20-foot container and is designed to hold up to four Naval Strike Missiles.

For the test, the company fired a missile from the unit and checked safety, handling, loading and launch-related pressure and blast effects.

The container can be moved between land, vehicles and ships, offering an alternative to launchers built permanently into a particular platform.

Its roof opens and an internal mechanism raises the launcher for firing, then retracts it for transport and storage.

The company-funded demonstration tested the concept, but the system’s use would still depend on integration, safety and operational requirements.

Kongsberg said the test could help prospective customers assess whether to adopt the approach.

A containerized solution can be pre-positioned and deployed discreetly to support operations wherever the need arises. At the same time, it enables capabilities to be distributed across larger areas, providing greater operational flexibility and more deployment options.
