Cost-of-living protest in Turin ends in clashes, with 12 people detained

Thousands marched against the rising cost of living in central Turin, Italy, on October 17.

The protest drew young people and students, and included student groups and pro-Palestinian groups.

Some protesters clashed with police, throwing objects as officers used tear gas and a water cannon to push the crowd back.

A group entered and damaged a Feltrinelli bookshop near Porta Nuova station, while organizers tried to stop some young participants from covering their faces.

Police detained 12 people, including 10 minors, and at least three protesters were taken to hospital with injuries.

The protest had been presented as non-political and independent of political parties, but organizers lost control of it.

Authorities are reviewing the detainees' cases, and police identification work continued after the march ended in Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
