Ibas backs melon farming and agrotourism in Magetan
Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono urged more support for farming and agrotourism in Magetan, a district in East Java, Indonesia.
A local farmers’ group grows three melon varieties in greenhouses: Sakata Glamour, Sweet Lavender and Kirani.
The group uses automated irrigation and controlled growing methods to manage water and nutrients, and the crop takes about 70 days to reach harvest.
Visitors can pick melons and learn about farming, and people from nearby areas as well as universities have visited.
Baskoro said this kind of agrotourism could create wider local business opportunities, including for food sellers and small businesses.
Magetan also produces pamelo oranges, strawberries and vegetables, and Baskoro said its farms and tourism potential should be developed further.

What people are saying
We do not need to go all the way to Japan or South Korea to get quality melons. Here in Magetan district, we can already produce good, sweet melons whose quality is competitive.
This is interesting because farming does not only produce fruit to sell, but also offers experiences, education and tourism.
