Kid Cudi to write, direct and star in Jean-Michel Basquiat biopic
Kid Cudi will write, direct and star in a Basquiat biopic about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Cudi announced the project on Instagram and shared early images of himself in costume.
He said filming is planned to begin in 2027.
Cudi said he had been asked to play Basquiat for years, but no project had taken shape, so he decided to write one himself.
He said he researched Basquiat through books and conversations with people who knew him, and described the film as a tribute to the artist, the 1980s and New York City.
Basquiat died in 1988 at age 27 from a heroin overdose.
A 1996 feature film about Basquiat starred Jeffrey Wright, so Cudi's project will not be the first narrative film about the artist.
The film's next stated step is production in 2027.

This film will be a love letter to Jean, the 80s and NY city.
To write a film about someone who existed was a challenge, but it was a welcomed one.
