Germany delays mandatory meat welfare label until October 2027

Germany’s parliament has delayed the mandatory meat welfare label until October 1, 2027, the third postponement of its launch.

The state label, approved by law in 2023, is meant to help shoppers understand how farm animals were kept before they buy meat.

It has five categories, from standard legal conditions to organic, while supermarket chains have used their own voluntary labels since 2019.

The planned reforms would extend the state system to restaurants and require labels for imported meat, not just products from Germany.

The European Commission has raised objections to including imports, so lawmakers say more time is needed to find a workable solution and continue talks with the Commission.

Animal welfare groups regret the delay, while the German Farmers’ Association has called for the scheme to be dropped.
