Beastars explores animal society through a darker lens than Zootopia

Beastars is a darker animated series about a society of talking animals than Disney’s family-focused Zootopia.

It follows Legoshi, a shy gray wolf at Cherryton Academy, after the murder of an alpaca student disrupts the school.

Carnivores struggle with urges to eat other animals, while herbivores fear being treated as prey.

The series examines the strain between these groups, including through an illegal Black Market where carnivores buy meat.

Based on Paru Itagaki’s manga, the anime uses animal characters to explore prejudice and social divisions, themes it shares with Zootopia.

Its 48 episodes span two seasons and a two-part Final Season, following Legoshi from school life toward building a life outside school.
