IMSS workers reject 8% pay proposal and plan national march

Workers at Mexico’s IMSS social security institute marched toward Mexico City’s Zócalo on October 21, their second protest over pay and workplace concerns.

The institute’s director, Zoé Robledo, proposed an 8% total increase, split between a 4% rise in base pay and 4% in housing assistance.

Workers rejected the offer and are seeking a 10% increase to base pay; the earlier proposal was 6.8% in total.

They also want action on medicine shortages and staff shortages, and some are calling for the removal of union leader Rafael Olivos Hernández.

Protesters accused medical-unit managers of pressuring workers who joined the demonstrations, while the institute and union have not responded to those claims in the supplied information.

Workers say they will continue mobilizing until their demands are met.

They have announced a national march for October 30, while the pay proposal still must go through the required process for implementation.

This increase listens to workers in the consultation called by the union; they expressed that the previous proposal was not enough and we improved it.

It was to destabilize us and say, ‘we’ve already given you your raise and that will calm you down,’ but it’s not just the salary; it’s the lack of supplies, medical staff, and a secretary who doesn’t support us.
