Jeonbuk researchers propose village farming groups to support older farmers
The Jeonbuk Research Institute proposed village-level farming groups to respond to an ageing rural population in South Korea.
Under the plan, a group would manage farmland across a village and organise crops to make farming more efficient.
The group would rent land from farmers and pay rent and performance-based rewards while doing the farming.
Farmers who keep working their own land could also join shared work, buy supplies together or help plan crops.
The institute says the model could help older farmers keep farming and earn income while creating jobs and supporting shared meals and care in villages.
It urged Jeonbuk province to test the plan in a pilot and assess how well it works.
The Jeonbuk Research Institute proposed village-level farming groups to help older farmers continue farming.
The model would combine management of village farmland while allowing individual farms to retain some advantages.
A corporate entity would lease farmland from farmers, cultivate it and provide rent and performance-based compensation.
Farmers who keep cultivating their own land could also take part through outsourced farm work, joint purchases of supplies or crop planning.
The institute said the model could also create jobs and support shared meals and care in rural communities.

What people are saying
In rural villages where older people make up a large share of the population, we need problem-solving policy planning that enables older farmers who have been left out to continue farming throughout their lives.
Jeonbuk should introduce a pilot project, confirm its effects and proactively develop a model.
